Choosing the right fans for Mission Controls
Making sure you have the right size ventilation system will help you get the best result from your Mission Controls® Temperature Controller, and although there are lots of equations floating around the internet to help calculate airflow requirement for indoor grow rooms, something must be wrong because we still see many mistakes made when setting up. And with over 90% of problems faced by indoor growers being a result of poor environmental control, getting the right ventilation system is paramount to success.
Our formula is based on the heat output generated by the lighting system, rather than just the size of the room. Keep in mind, a room of 18m3 with 9 lights would require more ventilation than the same size room with only 4 lights. That is why formulas based solely on room size are of little use. Our formula is time tested and scalable regardless of how many lights are being used and is recommended for users in the southern hemisphere. There’s also no need to get your measuring tape out!
Use the Calculator
To use the calculator just input the total number of watts of lighting you are using. This should include any Super-Lumen, Overdrive or Boost features.
Choose fans with an airflow rating as close to the figures provided.
If you can’t find an exact match, choose the closest you can, always opting for a higher airflow rating than a lower one, and taking care to make sure the smaller fan remains approximately one third to one half of the airflow capacity of the larger fan. This formula takes into account a carbon filter and short length of ducting is being used, but if you are using more than 2m of duct, or the duct has a number of bends, we advise adding 20% to the totals provided.
Following this formula will allow the best result from your Mission Controls Temperature Controller, ensuring:
- Accurate control of temperature, humidity and Co2
- Fans work at lowered speeds for the majority of time
- Fans have power in reserve for warmer times of the year
- A quieter, more efficient system
- Room operates under constant negative pressure
- Easy integration with Co2 generators
